About bean to cup machines
Bean to Cup machines are also called automatic coffee machines.. These have built-in grinders and produce a coffee on the touch of a button. The way they brew the coffee is very similar to a manual system but instead of you doing the grinding and tamping, the machine does it for you.
Grind Setting :
You can set the grinder to a required grind setting between coarse and fine. Gaggia Naviglio, Brera and Anima have 5 settings to choose from. 5 being the coarsest and 1 being the finest. On the Velasca models you have 10 settings. You will find more on the Babila and Accademia.
Dosage :
The grinder can even dose the chosen amount every time. One person can choose, say a 7g shot and another person can choose a 9g shot. The variations of dosage can depend on the machine model. For instance the Gaggia Anima, Velasca and Babila have 5 settings for strength. This allows you to choose 7g, or 8g or 9g or 10g or 11g every time. On the Naviglio, Brera and the Accademia the variations are 7g, 9g or 11g.
On most of our machines, you can also choose to use a pre-ground coffee through the pre-ground schute.
Memorising the amount to dispense : You have atleast two button that can be pre-set to measure the length of coffee. The default measurement is for an espresso on one button and long coffee on the other button. Some models have a medium coffee size. All these buttons can be re-programmed by the user as many times as you want. You can also press the coffee button twice to do a double shot of coffee.
Brewing:
Unlike grinding the coffee and putting it into the portafilter in a manual system, in the bean to cup system, the machine will grind the required amount and put it into the section (what I call a filter basket) of the brewing unit, automatically. A brewing unit in the Gaggia bean to cup machine is removable for cleaning. In the brewing unit, there is a built in tamper similar to a piston. When you press the button, the brewing unit goes into action. From a ‘Home’ position, it goes to a ‘Work’ position. Obviously, you cannot see this operation, but you will be able to hear the sound of whirring - moving to a ‘work position’. It tamps the coffee at the exact pressure needed, depending on the strength chosen. Then the machine automatically injects water from the boiler into the brewing unit at a constant pressure and this goes up the channel and infuses the coffee, and pushes it through a valve that releases it to the dispenser evenly.
Dregs :
The spent coffee is disposed of by the brewing unit into a dreg compartment for emptying later. Once the brewing unit has completed the cycle of brewing and ejecting the grounds (puck), it goes back to its original 'Home' position.

Milk frothing
All our machine have some form of milk frothing feature, starting from a traditional frothing arm called 'Pannerello Frother'. This means that you can be a real barista and learn to steam and froth and texture the milk for a frothy cappuccino or a caffe latte or a flat white. This is available on the following models :
Gaggia Naviglio
Gaggia Brera
Gaggia Anima [Black]
The next model comes with Carton to Cup frother which draws the milk from a milk carton or a container and froths the milk to a beautiful creamy milk texture using a device called the 'Cappuccinotore'. These frothers can also be used for normal traditional frothing or steaming by removing the 'Cappuccinotore' device. This is available on the following models :
Gagia Anima Deluxe
Gaggia Naviglio Deluxe
If you just want to press a button to get a cappuccino, the One Touch Models will do the job for you. All you need to do is to pour the milk into the milk carafe and press the button for the required milk drink. This is available on the following :

Test or diagNostic modes
All Gaggia bean to cup machines have built in test modes, some of which can be accessed by the user. They are not immediately visible but there are videos and instruction available from us, showing how to enter the Test Mode. With the Test Mode, you can check the various functions of the machine yourself. For example, you can check whether the sensors are working correctly, move the brewing unit to work or home position, check the pump, check heating of the boiler and working of the grinder etc. This also allows you to maintain the machine in terms of descaling and degreasing etc. Please visit our help page for videos.
