Gaggia concert screened worldwide raised  £3,000 for charity

A major charity concert sponsored by Gaggia and livestreamed worldwide has raised almost £3,000 for charity.

The event at Lindley Methodist Church in Huddersfield featured Marsh Ladies Choir, Huddersfield Men’s Voices, deaf musician Paul Whittaker, OBE and his amazing Musical Hands Singing Choir.

It was compered by well-known Huddersfield music leader and singer Thom Meredith who is musical director for the Yorkshire Philharmonic Choir and screened live on Zoom so anyone could watch it anywhere in the world.

Proceeds from the concert will support children’s education, particularly in Kenya, continuing a project that has helped young people access schooling and higher education over the past two decades.

It was organised by Gaggia UK managing director Raj Beadle who is also a member at Lindley Methodist Church.

The company sponsored the concert, which is now known as the Gaggia Charity Concert, as part of celebrations marking 75 years of the Gaggia coffee brand in the UK.

Raj said: “A special moment was the audience participation led by Musical Hands where everyone learned the sign language to Going To The Chapel which went down a treat and brought plenty of smiles and laughter. Thank you to everyone who attended, performed, volunteered, supported and encouraged us.’’

The soloist was Raj’s daughter, Katie Beadle, who sang the Joni Mitchell song Both Sides Now from the 2021 Oscar-winning film CODA (Child of Deaf Adults).

Raj said: “In the film the song became something deeper than sound – a connection, a feeling and a bridge between two worlds.’’
