GAGGIA BEAN-TO-CUP MACHINES
Hints and tips

Setting-up and Using Your Machine

Bean-to-Cup Machines
Before being packed, all our bean-to-cup machines undergo rigorous testing. Because coffee beans are used during testing, some residue may remain. This does not compromise the integrity of the product.
Please read the whole manual carefully before you install, use or clean your machine. Before using it for the first time, please read carefully, the safety manual provided separately and store it for future use.

Factory Settings
The following are the factory settings:
Grinder: medium strength
Temperature : Medium
Water Hardness : Medium
There are usually 3 – 5 settings for Aroma on our bean-to-cup machines. The factory setting is 3 on a 5 aroma model [Accademia, Babila, Cadorna, Magenta, Anima and Velasca] and 2 on a 3 aroma model [Brera, Naviglio]

Grinder
It is recommended that you do not change the grind setting until the machine has got used to the initial parameters of the factory settings. We recommend making a minimum of 5, ideally 10-15 coffees, before you change any settings for the aroma.

How the Grinder learns
When the coffee grinder is working, the software monitors the power consumption. If the ‘electrical current value’ is very low, the machine concludes that coffee is missing; if the ‘current value’ is very high, the machine concludes that the coffee grinder is blocked; If the ‘current value’ is in the middle, the machine concludes that all is ok, and it goes on to do the product.
Because the ‘current consumption’ of grinder changes depending on the situations (motor new or old, cold or hot, etc., coffee blends), these ‘current thresholds’ are not static, but dynamic.

The machine is programmed to learn from the grinder revolutions, the pressure the brewing unit piston applies on the coffee that is being pressed. The machine also will consider, the amount of coffee being ground based on the Aroma selection.
The grinder settings may need adjustment for different types of coffees, but if you change the coffee beans, it is going to take some time for the machine to re-learn the settings and settle down to the optimum levels.

Water Circuit
As new machines are stored for varying periods of time, you may find that the circuit priming may fail, in some cases. If you find that the circuit priming is taking some time, you may want to contact the service center. They can help you to run the circuit priming on a Test Mode to resolve the issue.

Water in the Drip tray
 The amount of water in the drip tray may vary depending on how the machine is used, depending on some of the following cases:
  1. Heating à Every time the machine is turned on, it starts a heating process of the hydraulic circuit, the hot water used comes out of the coffee dispenser and flows into the drip tray;
  2. Self-cleaning à Every time the machine is turned off, a cleaning process of the hydraulic circuit is started to extend the life of the product, the cold water used comes out of the coffee dispenser and flow into the drip tray;
  3. Product safety à At the end of each product dispensing cycle, the pressurized water in the hydraulic circuit is discharged into the drip tray through the discharge valve;
  4. Lowering the boiler temperature à When switching from dispensing a milk/steam/hot water product to a coffee product, to quickly lower the boiler temperature a quantity of hot water is discharged into the drip tray through the discharge valve.
  5. Water can drip from the brewing unit à The brewing unit needs to be lubricated and degreased on a regular basis.

These are the main reasons why the drip tray fills up with water.

Using Pre-Ground Chute
If you are using pre-ground coffee, please remember the following:
  1. Check the Pre-Ground Coffee : Try a filter or espresso grind. If the grind is too fine or too coarse it can be rejected by the brewing system.
  2. Use the Correct Amount : Make sure you are using the right amount of pre-ground coffee. Typically, one level scoop (about 7 grams) is recommended. Using too much can cause the machine to clog.
  3. Clean the Pre-Ground Coffee Chute: Sometimes, coffee grounds can get stuck in the chute. Use a small brush or a vacuum to clean out any residual coffee.
  4. Check for Blockages : Ensure there are no blockages in the brew group or the coffee chute. Remove the brew group and clean it thoroughly.

 Coffee Temperature
The coffee made for the first time, after switching the machine can be less than optimal. This is because the brewing unit and the dispenser are cold when the machine starts. To make all the brewing parts warm, it is important to do the following:
  1. Turn on the machine and select one of the medium to large coffee options. Eg Coffee on a Magenta [120cc] or Espresso Lungo. Run this drink on a pre-ground option, but without adding any pre-ground coffee. This should dispense hot water through the dispenser. Collect this in your cup that you want to use to make the coffee making the cup/mug to be warm when you make the next coffee. The brewing unit and dispenser will be warm too by performing this procedure.

Test Mode – Diagnostic Mode
Every Gaggia bean-to-cup machine has its own Test Mode. This mode is not available on the Instruction Manuals but can be accessed by users with the help of our help line staff or using videos on our website. https://www.gaggiadirect.com/maintenance-and-repair.html

Test mode allows you to test the pump, water circuit, Brewing Unit Movements, Sensors, Microswitches, Grinders and heaters. If you need help to diagnose the problem with your machine, our help line staff can guide you through the steps.
